HS Building Management is responsible for the management of all corridors, stairwells, and other common areas in Health Sciences facilities. We coordinate with service partners to ensure that occupant needs are met in these parts of the building. We also manage the use of common spaces throughout the building. Any changes, temporary or permanent, to a common area in the building must be approved by HS Building Management. For information about corridor safety on campus, review the EH&S Corridor Safety Focus Sheet.
Common Area Guidelines
Bicycles, scooters, and other wheeled conveyances are strictly prohibited in all campus buildings. Review WAC 478-118-290 for more information.
If you are seen bringing a bike or scooter into the building, you will be asked to leave and secure it in a proper location. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in disciplinary action or impoundment of the bike/scooter.
There are several bike lockers and houses around the Health Sciences facilities. Review Transportation Services page for more information.
Storing research freezers or fridges in corridors is only permitted if no other storage locations are available. Please contact HS Building Management for approval.
Freezers and fridges stored in the corridor must be seismically secured to the wall. They must have up-to-date contact information posted on the outside. They must have a locking mechanism and remain locked when not in use.
All corridor, hallway, and common area furniture must be approved by HS Building Management prior to installation. Do not move common area furniture from its assigned location.
Furniture is never permitted along egress routes or in stairwells.
Posters, flyers, and announcements cannot be taped or tacked to the walls. Please review the Posting Policy page for more information on where posting is allowed.
HS Building Management is responsible for approving and updating directional signage in Health Sciences buildings. If you have a question or a concern, please contact HS Building Management.
If you have an event and would like to post temporary directional signage, please contact Classroom Services. They have sign stands available for rental. Departments may not place their own sign stands around the building.
In general, corridors and hallways should not be used to store items. Loose items are a hazard in the event of a building emergency, and corridors are not secure storage locations. Item storage is never permitted along egress routes or in stairwells.
If you would like to place storage in the hallway, please contact HS Building Management for permission. Items that are being surplused should not be placed in the hallway while waiting for pickup.
HS Building Management will contact department admin about improperly stored items. Departments are responsible for responding to storage issues when notified. If departments do not follow storage guidelines, HS Building Management reserves the right to relocate items or halt services until the issue is resolved.
